So last night, after a long 30 something hour trip from Banff, we finally arrived at our beautiful campsite for the week. We have chosen to stay at Lake Cahuilla which is the closest campsite other than the festival itself of course, and it's the most lovely place. Right on the edge of a huge lake, of course hence the name, with a pool and palm trees and mountains - it's just stunning. So after a few hours around the campfire with a couple of beers we got some shut eye ready for the inevitably crazy three days ahead.
Today's schedule looked something like this, in chronological order of course: Ruen Brothers, Peking Duk, George Ezra, Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires, Angus and Julia Stone, The War on Drugs, Alabama Shakes, Interpol, Steely Dan, Tame Impala and AC/DC.
Ruen Brothers was a good chilled way to start off the day, really cool relaxing music to shade from the sun in. Peking Duk however was so full on for 2pm in the afternoon. If I was drunk then I would have been so into this set, but it was a little bit too much for me so early on in the day. George Ezra of course was awesome. I love his music. It's really nice how down to earth he is and how genuinely surprised he was by how many people had come to watch his set. I really enjoyed it.
I had never heard of Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires but Danny wanted to go see them, so we did, and it was good, if a tad weird. He made a costume change half way through into some kind of bizarre top which no front and a collar - very strange, however you cannot fault his huge soulful voice. A joy to listen to if not watch. Our friends that we came with introduced me to Angus and Julia Stone, a brother and sister duo who have such awesome music - something which I'm going to definitely look into further when I get home. She is so cool and sexy and so much fun to watch dancing around the stage - I bloody wish I looked like that. And sounded like that. And could dance like that. Yeh,
As we headed into the evening other than AC/DC, I knew none of the acts so I just went along with it. I bloody loved Alabama Shakes. Everyone ridiculed me for having no idea who the band were, but boy do I know. That woman's voice!!! How is it even possible to someone to have a voice with that power, it was awesome. I definitely enjoyed a good dance to that with a cheeky vodka powerade in my hand (gross by the way). Interpol's set consisted of me just gazing dreamily at the lead singer who had this sultry sexy stare going on as if you were the only one he was looking at. It was pretty captivating, I think Jozie and I developed a slight crush. Oh and the music was pretty good, if distracted by those big blue eyes.
Tame Impala was an awesome way to head into the end of the night, topped off with AC/DC! The atmosphere was electric, the crowd were going crazy, and we were just having the most fun. I might not have known all of their songs, it is a bit before my time remember, but their involvement with the audience and sheer power they were putting into their performance made it such a great experience. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's line up, with a few more familiar names and hopefully some surprise guest appearances. Here's hoping...
